Why Premium Lacquer? The Paint System Behind Our Objects

A multi-layer build of primer, pigmented base coat and clear coat with controlled curing. Why we use the most demanding premium paint system available.

The Premium Paint System

Demanding premium manufacturers have developed the world's most sophisticated paint systems over decades. No other discipline invests as much in surface quality, because the result must withstand years of sun, rain, and temperature fluctuations while looking flawless.

This is exactly the system we use for our sculptural objects. Every finish is created by hand in our atelier near Düsseldorf, layer by layer.

The Build: A Multi-Layer Premium Paint System

Every Harmony & Apollo object goes through a layer structure as used in the most demanding premium manufacturing:

1. Primer — Multiple coats using our proprietary formulation, hand-sanded through multiple stages. Each coat is applied individually and wet-sanded between layers. This creates the perfect foundation for everything that follows. Only when the surface is perfectly even does the next step begin.

2. Base Coat — The pigmented colour application. Solid colours in a single pass; metallic and effect finishes in multiple passes with precise control of pigment distribution. Colour depth is created here: depending on the finish, pigments are aligned to refract and reflect light in a specific way.

3. Clear Coat — Multiple layers of high-gloss clear coat seal the colour depth and create the characteristic deep gloss. Each coat is applied individually and carefully flash-dried. The clear coat permanently protects the underlying layers from UV radiation and weathering.

4. Curing — Controlled drying under optimal conditions. This step takes several days and can be neither accelerated nor skipped. Only after full curing does the final inspection follow.

What Makes This Build Special

The difference from a simple paint application lies in how the layers interact. Each layer has its own function: adhesion, colour, depth, protection. Only when all layers are correctly built up and fully cured does the surface emerge that defines a Harmony & Apollo object.

This system is time-intensive. A single object undergoes up to two weeks of painting and drying before it reaches final inspection.

Why Not Standard Industrial Paint?

Industrial paints dry in hours instead of days. They are more affordable and faster, but they cannot achieve the surface quality we demand for our objects. The difference shows in depth: a premium finish has a colour depth and brilliance that is physically tangible. You don't just see the colour, you see into the colour.

Anyone who has touched a surface created by this process understands the difference immediately. The finish feels smooth yet alive, with a depth that changes with every shift in light.

The Result

A long-term stable finish with UV-resistant high-gloss clear coat and ceramic sealing, weather-resistant through the multi-layer premium paint system, transferred to sculptural form. The surface quality sets the standard for sculptural objects in premium finish.

Every finished object is inspected under controlled lighting conditions before delivery. Only when the surface meets our quality standards does the object leave our atelier.
