What Is Color-Shift Paint?
Colour-shift paints use sophisticated effect pigments found in the most demanding premium metallic lacquers. Unlike conventional metallic pigments, these effect pigments create a deeper, more vivid colour shift.
These pigments are finer and more uniform than conventional metallic particles. This produces a more intense colour change that shifts with every viewing angle. What makes these finishes so special: the colour is in motion. It changes as you move, as the light travels, as the time of day shifts.
Why Viola Prisma?
We chose Viola Prisma as our signature finish because it makes the connection between sculpture and surface visible in a unique way. The sculptural forms of our objects offer light numerous angles and curves. A colour-shift finish uses precisely this geometry, transforming every facet, every curve into its own colour zone.
Viola Prisma in Detail
Our signature finish Viola Prisma is a 3-layer system:
Layer 1: Base Coat — The base coat forms the foundation for the colour shift and determines how the effect pigments above it come to life.
Layer 2: Effect Pigment Layer — Violet effect pigments are applied in a transparent binder. The pigments align parallel to the surface during flash-off time, creating the characteristic depth effect.
Layer 3: Clear Coat — Multiple coats of premium clear coat seal the effect and give the finish its depth and durability.
Each of these layers is applied individually and dried under controlled conditions. The entire process requires experience and patience, as even small variations in layer thickness can alter the colour effect.
The Colour Shift
Viewed head-on, Viola Prisma appears as a deep, almost black aubergine. As the viewing angle changes, a luminous violet reveals itself, lending the surface a living quality. Under direct light, the finish unveils a fine, diamond-like brilliance.
Viola Prisma is particularly striking on our faceted forms. The geometric planes display the colour shift from multiple angles simultaneously, so a single object carries several tones at once.
Staging
Viola Prisma reaches its full impact against neutral backgrounds. Light walls, concrete, or natural stone let the colour shift stand out clearly. Targeted lighting amplifies the effect further: a side-mounted spot creates a flowing transition from aubergine to violet across the sculptural surface.
